What Is A Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure to remove inflamed or infected tissue from inside the tooth. The infected tissue is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected tooth, prevent reinfection of the tooth, and prevent the need for implants or dentures.

Root canals have a reputation of being painful and are possibly the most dreaded dental procedure, but this is unwarranted. While a root canal typically takes longer to complete than a filling, the tooth is numb and the procedure should be comfortable. However, having an infected tooth that needs root canal therapy to fix can be incredibly painful, which is where this stigma comes from. ​
